What is Red Light Therapy?

Red Light is a Class IV therapeutic laser — a medical device that delivers focused light energy at specific wavelengths to stimulate healing at the cellular level. It is FDA-cleared for the treatment of pain, inflammation, and musculoskeletal conditions. This is not a cosmetic laser or a low-level "cold" laser; it is a high-powered therapeutic laser capable of penetrating 10 to 15 centimeters into body tissue, reaching muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and nerves that surface-level treatments cannot effectively address.

The science behind Red Light is called photobiomodulation — the use of specific wavelengths of light to trigger biological responses in cells. When laser light of the correct wavelength is absorbed by cells, it activates the mitochondria (the cell's energy-producing structures) to produce more ATP, which is the molecule that powers cellular activity. This boost in cellular energy accelerates the repair cycle: damaged cells rebuild faster, inflammation resolves more quickly, and nerve function normalizes sooner. How it works

During a Red Light session, the treatment head is moved slowly over the skin above the injured or painful area. The laser emits light at wavelengths in the near-infrared spectrum — 800 to 980 nanometers — which are specifically chosen because they penetrate through skin and into the target tissue with minimal surface absorption. Once that light energy reaches the cells, the photons are absorbed primarily by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondria. This absorption triggers a cascade of beneficial cellular events: increased ATP production, reduced oxidative stress, release of nitric oxide (which improves local blood flow), and activation of anti-inflammatory signaling pathways.

In practical terms, this means the injured tissue receives more energy to repair itself, better circulation to deliver oxygen and nutrients, and reduced inflammation that would otherwise delay healing and prolong pain. For nerve-related pain conditions, photobiomodulation has been shown to reduce nerve sensitization and support nerve fiber regeneration. What happens during a session

Red Light sessions are short, simple, and comfortable. You'll be positioned comfortably on the treatment table with the area being treated accessible and exposed — a sleeve rolled up for an elbow, lying face down for a lower back session. Both you and your provider will wear protective eyewear during the session, as direct eye exposure to laser light is contraindicated. The treatment head is then moved slowly over the treatment area in a scanning pattern, delivering energy to the full region of injury rather than a single point.

Sessions typically last four to eight minutes per area, depending on the size of the region being treated and the dose prescribed. During treatment you may feel a mild warming sensation beneath the skin — this is normal and indicates the laser energy is being absorbed by the tissue. The sensation should never be hot or uncomfortable; if it is, your provider will adjust accordingly. There is no downtime after a Red Light session. You can resume normal activity immediately. Red Light is often scheduled at the same appointment as your chiropractic adjustment, making it easy to incorporate into a comprehensive care visit without adding significant time to your day.

Expected results & timeline

Many patients notice some improvement after their first one to three Red Light sessions — reduced soreness, better range of motion, or decreased intensity of pain. Acute injuries tend to respond the most quickly, sometimes dramatically so. A patient with a fresh ankle sprain, for example, might see swelling and pain substantially reduced after two or three sessions. This rapid early response is one of the features that distinguishes Class IV laser from lower-powered alternatives.

Chronic conditions — long-standing tendinitis, arthritis, or nerve pain — generally require a longer course to achieve meaningful results. A typical treatment course for chronic conditions runs eight to twelve sessions over three to six weeks. Is Red Light the same as low-level or cold laser therapy?

No — and the difference matters clinically. Low-level or "cold" lasers operate at power levels measured in milliwatts and can only penetrate a few millimeters into skin. They may have some surface benefit, but they cannot reach deeper muscles, tendons, joints, or nerves. Red Light is a Class IV therapeutic laser operating at power levels measured in watts — many times more powerful — and can penetrate 10 to 15 centimeters into tissue. This depth of penetration is what makes it effective for genuine musculoskeletal injuries rather than just surface-level discomfort. When you hear "laser therapy" in a healthcare setting, it's worth asking what class of laser is being used.

Does Red Light hurt?

No. The treatment produces a mild warming sensation in the treated area, which most patients find comfortable — and some find pleasant. It is completely non-invasive; there are no needles, incisions, or physical pressure involved. If at any point the warmth feels excessive, your provider will immediately reduce the intensity. The protective eyewear you'll wear during the session is the main precaution required, as the laser wavelengths used are not safe for direct eye exposure.

Is Red Light therapy safe?

Yes. Red Light is FDA-cleared and has an extensive safety record in clinical use. The primary safety precaution is eye protection, which is provided for both patient and provider during every session. Red Light should not be applied directly over active cancer sites, over the thyroid gland, or over a pregnant uterus. Patients on photosensitizing medications should inform their provider before treatment. Outside of these specific contraindications, Red Light has an excellent safety profile and is well-tolerated across a wide range of patients including older adults and those with complex health histories.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the condition being treated and how your body responds. Acute injuries often respond noticeably within one to three sessions, and a short course of six to eight sessions is usually sufficient. Chronic conditions typically require eight to twelve sessions to achieve the best results, with maintenance sessions afterward as needed.
