Condition we treat

Low back pain treatment in Chicago’s South Loop

The most common reason patients visit us — and one of the most mismanaged conditions in healthcare. We find the structural cause and build a plan to correct it.

What is Low Back Pain?

Low back pain refers to discomfort, stiffness, or limited mobility anywhere in the lumbar region — roughly from the bottom of your ribcage to the top of your pelvis. It is one of the most widespread health complaints in the world. An estimated 80% of adults will experience a significant episode of low back pain at some point in their lives, and it is the single leading cause of job-related disability in the United States.

The lumbar spine bears the weight of your entire upper body and is involved in nearly every movement you make — bending, lifting, twisting, even sitting and standing. Because of this constant mechanical demand, problems in this region rarely resolve on their own when the underlying structural cause has not been identified. What begins as an occasional ache can progress to persistent pain, muscle guarding, and significant limitations in daily activity.

Low back pain is the most common condition we see at Advanced Health Chiropractic, and it presents in many different ways: a dull, constant ache; sharp pain with movement; stiffness after sleep; or pain that radiates into the hips or legs. Understanding which structure is generating your pain is the first and most important step toward lasting relief.

Common symptoms

Low back pain can feel different from person to person. Common presentations include:

  • Dull, aching pain in the lower back that worsens with prolonged sitting or standing
  • Sharp or stabbing pain when bending, lifting, or changing positions
  • Morning stiffness that takes 20–30 minutes to ease after waking
  • Muscle tightness or spasm on one or both sides of the lower back
  • Pain that radiates into the buttocks, hips, or upper thighs
  • Difficulty standing fully upright or walking for extended periods

Why typical treatment often falls short

The most common approach to low back pain — whether from a primary care physician, urgent care, or even many physical therapists — is to manage the pain and inflammation in the short term. Muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories, and heat packs can reduce discomfort, and some patients do feel better for a few weeks. But in the majority of cases, the pain returns, sometimes worse than before. That is because the treatment never addressed the structural reason the pain started.

Low back pain is rarely caused by a muscle in isolation. Muscles tighten and spasm because the spine beneath them is unstable, compressed, or misaligned. If a disc is bulging and pressing on a nerve root, or if vertebrae have shifted and altered the mechanics of the entire lumbar region, relaxing the surrounding musculature provides only temporary relief. As soon as you return to normal activity, the same structural stresses are still present, and the cycle of pain begins again. Identifying and correcting that structural root cause is what separates a temporary fix from a real solution.

How we treat Low Back Pain at Advanced Health

Every patient at Advanced Health Chiropractic begins with a thorough New Patient Exam. We take a detailed history, perform a postural and orthopedic assessment, and review any relevant imaging. Our goal in that first visit is not just to confirm that you have low back pain — it is to determine exactly which structure is causing it and why. That distinction drives everything in your care plan.

For low back pain, structural findings often point to disc compression, lumbar vertebral misalignment, anterior or posterior pelvic tilt, or degenerative changes that have gone unaddressed. Using the principles of Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP), we assess your spinal alignment against established healthy norms and develop a correction strategy — not just pain management. Every care plan comes with a defined timeline and measurable goals so you always know where you stand.

Depending on the root cause of your low back pain, your care plan may include: Chiropractic Adjustment, Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP), Spinal Decompression, Physical Therapy, and Corrective Exercises.

Unlike a generic "come in three times a week indefinitely" approach, our plans are designed with your specific structural findings in mind. We set realistic milestones, reassess at regular intervals, and adjust your plan based on how your body is responding. When you graduate from care, you will understand what caused your pain and how to keep it from coming back.

What to expect

Your first visit is a comprehensive New Patient Exam lasting approximately 60 minutes. Dr. Stringer or Dr. Ferguson will review your full health history, conduct a detailed postural and functional assessment, perform orthopedic and neurological testing specific to the lumbar spine, and identify whether imaging is needed to complete the picture. By the end of your first appointment, you will have a clear explanation of what is causing your pain — not a vague "your back is out" but a specific, evidence-based finding you can understand.

Most patients with low back pain begin to feel measurable improvement within the first few weeks of care. The full correction of structural issues — particularly disc and spinal alignment problems — typically requires a longer commitment, and we will be transparent with you about realistic timelines from the start. Many of our patients with chronic or recurrent low back pain who have tried other providers without lasting results finally find lasting relief once the structural root cause is properly identified and treated. Over 10,000 patients in the South Loop and greater Chicago area have gone through our process — many of them after years of unsuccessful treatment elsewhere.

"Dr. Stringer's care turned my chronic back pain around. Six weeks and I'm finally sleeping through the night again — actually moving like I used to."
