Here's what the light actually does inside a knee, who tends to be a good candidate, and where it fits into the rest of your care.
What red light therapy is and how it works on knee tissue
Red light therapy — the clinical term is photobiomodulation — uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to change what's happening inside your cells. It isn't heat, and it isn't a surgical laser that cuts anything. It's light delivered at a dose chosen for the tissue you're trying to reach.
Two bands of light do different jobs, and for a knee both matter:
- Red light works nearer the surface — skin, superficial soft tissue, and the structures right around the joint capsule.
- Near-infrared light penetrates deeper. The medical-grade laser we use delivers light in the 800–980nm range, which reaches several centimeters into muscle, tendon, ligament, and the joint itself.
Inside the cell, those photons are absorbed by the mitochondria — the cellular energy factories. When mitochondrial activity goes up, cells are thought to have more energy available for repair, and the local environment can shift with it: less oxidative stress, more blood and lymph flow into the area, a calmer inflammatory response. Less inflammation in a knee generally means more room to move and less pain when you load it.
Light doesn't rebuild a worn joint. It's designed to improve the conditions that joint has to heal in — which is why we use red light therapy alongside other care, not on its own.
Who's a good candidate for red light therapy for knee pain
The people who get the most out of it tend to fall into a few groups:
- Knee osteoarthritis and degeneration. You've lost joint height over the years, and loading the knee leaves it swollen and achy for the rest of the day.
- Anyone weighing non-surgical options first. You've been told a replacement is somewhere on the horizon and you'd like to exhaust conservative care before you get there.
- Runners and weekend athletes. A knee that gets angry at mile four, or that hasn't been the same since an old sports injury, often responds well to inflammation-focused care.
- Chronic knee pain that hasn't moved with one thing at a time. Physical therapy alone, a cortisone shot alone, or rest alone hasn't held.
It isn't right for every knee. We don't use laser over an active cancer site, over the thyroid, or on a pregnant abdomen, and some medications make skin more light-sensitive — screening for that is part of your exam.

What a red light therapy session looks like here
Nothing about it is dramatic, which surprises some patients. We start with the exam and X-rays, because the light is only useful if it's aimed at the right problem.
From there, a treatment runs roughly 10 to 15 minutes per area. You and your provider both wear protective eyewear — a laser strong enough to reach a joint warrants it. Most people feel a mild, pleasant warmth and nothing else, and there's no downtime and no needles.
For knees we deliver it two ways: a handheld therapeutic laser scanned over the joint, or a wearable red light unit strapped around the knee while you're on the decompression table. That second setup is built into our knee program, which is why the light rarely takes up a visit on its own.
The dose is set by a clinician for your joint rather than by a preset on a consumer panel.
How red light therapy fits into our Knee Restoration Program
