Chiropractic care at Advanced Health starts with the question that drives everything else: what is actually causing the pain? A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, hands-on movement applied to a joint that has stopped moving the way it should — in the spine, or in the extremities such as the shoulder, hip, knee, or foot. When a joint is restricted or shifted out of alignment, it stresses the surrounding muscles, discs, and nerves. Restoring that motion is the first step toward taking pressure off the structures that hurt.

We are a South Loop chiropractor on S Wabash, above the Trader Joe's, and we have helped thousands of friends and neighbors from the South Loop and greater Chicago. Our care is built around what surrounds the adjustment: the exam, the imaging, and the plan. Every patient starts with an exam and, when clinically indicated, X-rays, so the adjustment is aimed at what your imaging and examination show rather than at where it happens to hurt today. Progress is measured with before-and-after data, and every care plan has a defined finish line.

Chiropractic adjustments are delivered by our doctors of chiropractic. Depending on your findings, adjustments may be combined with Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) for structural correction, spinal decompression for disc injuries, physical therapy to hold the correction, and soft tissue therapy to break down muscle adhesions and improve tissue health.

Joints are designed to move through a full, stable range of motion. When one stops doing that — after an injury, from years of desk posture, or from repetitive strain — the body compensates. Nearby joints move too much, muscles guard and tighten, and the nerve exiting at that level can become irritated. That pattern is what chiropractors call a subluxation, and it is what an adjustment is designed to address.

All of our doctors trained at Palmer College of Chiropractic, the profession's founding school, and adjust using the Palmer package of techniques. During an adjustment, your doctor applies a quick, controlled movement to the restricted joint, either by hand or with a hand-held instrument adjuster, which is especially useful for extremities such as the foot, ankle, and wrist. The goal is to restore motion at that segment and reduce the mechanical stress on the tissue around it. Many patients hear a small pop, which is gas releasing from the joint fluid, not bone moving against bone. Adjustments are chosen by the findings on your exam and X-rays, so the segments treated are the ones your imaging shows are restricted or misaligned, not a generic routine.

At Advanced Health, we most often use chiropractic care for:

• Low back pain and neck pain — from desk posture, lifting, or long-standing alignment changes
• Headaches with a neck component, including tension-type and cervicogenic headaches

Chiropractic care is not right for every condition. Your doctor will tell you during the exam whether an adjustment is appropriate for you, and will refer you elsewhere if it is not.

Your first visit is a new patient exam. It includes a detailed history — what hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what it is stopping you from doing — followed by a postural assessment, orthopedic and neurological testing, and X-rays when they are warranted. By the end of that visit you will know what our exam and imaging found, what we believe is driving your symptoms, and the plan we recommend.

Treatment visits are shorter and hands-on. Your doctor reviews how you have been since the last visit, then delivers the adjustments your plan calls for, often combined on the same visit with physical therapy exercises, CBP traction, or soft tissue therapy. A full treatment visit typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, depending on what your plan includes. Most patients go straight back to their normal activity after a visit; your doctor will tell you if anything should be modified. We are open Monday to Thursday from 9:30am to 1pm and 2:30pm to 6:30pm, Friday from 9:30am to 1pm, and Saturday from 8am to noon. Same-day and same-week appointments are usually available.

Many patients notice changes such as easier movement, less stiffness, or a lower intensity of pain as their care plan progresses. How quickly that happens varies with the condition, how long it has been present, and whether structural changes are involved. Recent, simple restrictions tend to respond more quickly than long-standing alignment changes, which need a longer, more structured plan.

What we can promise is the process: a specific diagnosis, a plan with defined goals and a finish line, and progress checks along the way so you always know where you stand. We do not believe in open-ended care. When your plan concludes, you leave with a home exercise program and a clear picture of what changed. Many patients return for periodic visits as needed, but the goal is a foundation you can maintain yourself.

Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

For most patients, no. You may feel pressure and hear a pop, and it is common to feel mild soreness for a day or so after early visits, similar to starting a new exercise. Your doctor adjusts the technique to your comfort, and instrument-assisted adjusting is available for patients who prefer a gentler approach or who need extremity work.

What does your approach look like?

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your diagnosis and how long the problem has been there. A recent, simple restriction may need only a short course. Structural correction of a lost neck or low back curve is a longer, structured plan. Your doctor will give you a recommended plan after your exam, with the number of visits and the goals written down, and will reassess as you go.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept many major insurance plans. We perform a complimentary benefit check for every new patient and review it with you after your first visit, at your report of findings. For services a plan does not cover, we provide transparent pricing up front.

Can I see a chiropractor while pregnant?

In most cases, yes. Our doctors are trained in the Webster technique and treat patients through all three trimesters and postpartum.
