Poor posture can cause herniated discs

How poor posture wears down spinal discs over time, why sitting raises disc pressure by 300%, and what you can do to protect your spine.

Poor posture doesn't just make you look slumped — it physically breaks down the discs in your spine. If you sit at a desk most of the day or live with forward head posture, you're loading your discs in ways they weren't designed to handle. This post explains how that happens, what a disc herniation actually is, and how we approach it at our South Loop office.

What a spinal disc does

A spinal disc sits between two vertebrae and acts like a shock absorber. Just as importantly, it separates the bones enough to leave room for nerves to exit the spinal canal.

Healthy discs are full of fluid — spongy, malleable, and able to absorb force as your spine moves, flexes, and rotates. When discs work well, the rest of your spine and nervous system work well.

How posture damages discs over time

Repetitive stress is the problem. Take poor neck posture as an example: your head drifts out in front of your chest, you lose your natural neck curve, and you put too much pressure on the front of the disc.

Do that for years and the stress and tension break the joint down. The disc follows. That's how bulges and herniations start — not from one bad lift, but from thousands of hours of bad loading.

Bulge vs. herniation vs. prolapse

When a disc is under pressure from poor alignment, you first start to lose space between the vertebrae. The disc fluid begins to push outward into the nerve canal. That's a bulge.

A herniation is the next step. The collagen tissue on the outside of the disc cracks. Instead of staying in the central part of the disc, the fluid shifts outward — sometimes directly into the nerve canal.

Severity depends on how much collagen damage there is and how much fluid escapes. Bulges and herniations sit on the lower end. A dissection or prolapse — where the disc is completely damaged — is the severe end, and often requires surgery.

The desk-job problem

Your lower back should have about a 40-degree curve. That curve isn't decorative — it's engineered to absorb force at the back of the joint, where the bone is built to handle it.

After ten years of sitting 40 hours a week, we routinely see that curve flattened to 20 degrees. That's a 50% loss, and it's common in what I call the corporate athlete.

Here's why that matters: with less curve, weight no longer gets absorbed at the back of the joint. It migrates forward into the middle and front of the joint. Lean forward over a keyboard on top of that, and the front of the disc takes the full load.

Research is clear that sitting in a flexed, forward-leaning position increases pressure inside the disc by as much as 300%. Repeat that day after day, and disc herniations and spinal degeneration are a predictable result.
