If you've been searching for a back pain chiropractor in Chicago, the first visit is usually the part people worry about most — how long it takes, what actually happens, whether you'll be pushed into a decision before you're ready. This post walks you through exactly what a first visit looks like at our South Loop office, so you know what to expect before you ever step in the door.
Why the first visit matters more than the treatment
Most low back pain has more than one driver — a disc, a joint, soft tissue, posture, load — and treating the wrong one is how people end up frustrated after months of care that never quite sticks. The first visit is where we sort that out. Nothing about your plan should be assumed before we've done real work to understand what's actually going on.
That's why we treat the first visit as a diagnostic appointment, not a treatment appointment. You'll leave knowing what's driving your pain — not just where it hurts.
Step 1: the health history conversation
Your first stop is a sit-down with one of our chiropractors. We map the timeline of your back pain — when it started, whether there was a specific injury, what makes it worse, what quiets it down, and how it's interfering with your day-to-day.
Then we talk about the life you're trying to get back to. Maybe you want to sit through a full workday at the desk without shifting every ten minutes. Maybe it's picking up your kids again, or getting back to running along the lakefront. Those specifics matter — they shape the goals we build the plan around.
Step 2: a full physical exam
Next we run a full physical, neurological, and orthopedic exam of the joints, soft tissue, and nerves around your low back. We check range of motion in the spine and hips carefully — restoring motion is one of the biggest levers we have for helping back pain, and we want a baseline we can measure against later.
We're looking for what's moving well, what's stuck, what's inflamed, and whether the nerves running down into the legs are being irritated. Everything gets written down — this becomes the record we compare against at your progress exam.
Step 3: digital X-rays, on site
We take X-rays on the majority of our low back pain patients. They're included in the new patient exam, we shoot them in-office on our digital system, and you don't need a separate imaging appointment.
X-rays give us an objective view of your spine that a physical exam can't — alignment, disc spacing, degenerative changes, any structural surprises. Every film is also reviewed by a DACBR, a chiropractic radiologist, so nothing gets missed. We then run the images through biomechanical software called PostureRay, which measures the shape of your spine down to the millimeter — the same kind of measurement we use to guide Chiropractic BioPhysics corrective work when it fits.
Dealing with back pain and want a real answer, not a guess? Our new patient exam includes the sit-down, the physical, and digital X-rays. Book online at /schedule or call (312) 987-4878** — we're at 1147 S. Wabash Ave. #250B in the South Loop, above the Trader Joe's.
Step 4: the report of findings
Once we've done the exam and read your images, we sit back down with you and walk through what we found. This is where most patients get the clearest picture they've had of why their back hurts — often for the first time in years.
We'll show you the films, point out what we're seeing, and explain how the exam findings line up with them. Then we lay out your options:
- Relief-focused care — a short series of visits aimed at calming the pain down.
- A more comprehensive plan — pairs adjustments with spinal decompression for disc involvement, targeted physical therapy to rebuild the support around the spine, and — for structural cases — Chiropractic BioPhysics corrective work.
- Nothing at all, if what you need is a referral somewhere else. If the pain is coming from something outside our lane, we'll say so and point you in the right direction.
You choose the path. We don't push care plans on patients who came in for a second opinion, and we don't sell anything the exam didn't call for.
Who this fits best
The first-visit process is built for the person who's been dealing with back pain for a while and is tired of not knowing what's actually driving it. That's often a downtown desk worker whose low back locks up by 3pm. Sometimes it's a lakefront runner whose mileage has crept up and whose back is telling them it's had enough. Sometimes it's someone whose back has flared on and off for years and who's finally ready to see it on an X-ray instead of guessing.
If your pain is severe, radiating down the leg with numbness or weakness, or worsening quickly, tell us when you book — we'll route you appropriately, and if you need urgent care first, we'll tell you that too.
How long the visit takes, and what to bring
Plan on about 60–75 minutes for the first visit. That covers the history, the exam, the X-rays, and time for questions. Bring any recent imaging you already have (MRI, prior X-rays) if you can — we'll pull them into the review. Wear something comfortable that lets you move.
You don't need a referral, and we accept new patients directly. If you'd like a preview before you come in, our new patients page has the paperwork and directions to the office.
Bottom line
A first visit at a back pain chiropractor should leave you with a clearer answer than you walked in with. Ours is designed to do exactly that — real history, a full physical, on-site X-rays, and a straight conversation about what your options are. Whether you end up in care with us or somewhere closer to home, you'll leave knowing what's driving your pain and what to do about it.
If the South Loop is close to home or work, we'd be glad to be one of the clinics you compare. Schedule your new patient exam, or give us a call at (312) 987-4878.
